County Description - 1843

*Hanover County, Virginia is situated toward the east part of the state, and contains 630 square miles. North Anna River runs on its north east border. It is watered by its tributaries. The surface is hilly, and the soil various, from the most fertile to the most sterile. Capital [county seat], Hanover. There were in 1840, neat cattle 8,388, sheep 9,051, swine 13,703; wheat 47,905 bushels produced, rye 1,013, Indian corn 349,750, oats 177,347, potatoes 26,332, tobacco 615,156 pounds, cotton 22,549; 17 stores with a capital of $20,300; 1 tannery, 2 flouring mills, 19 grist mills, 16 saw mills. Capital in manufactures, $35,965.
23 academies with 417 students.
Population: whites 6,262, slaves 8,394, free colored 312; total, 14,968.
